Our day started with a trip to the supermarket to replenish our supplies. We admired the trolleys with cars underneath for children to drive - our grandkids would love these!
We had been to this supermarket before and knew the ropes - get a sticker for your veggies and for your bread. The fish section wasn't set up yet but the deli was, complete with the usual display of hams. We wanted to re-create a tapas we had enjoyed - bread with olive oil and tomato and anchovies. A shop assistant directed us to the refrigerated section for the tins of anchovies - not sure we have them like this in Australia.
After offloading our supplies, we headed back across the bridge to the old town. We took the steps up this time - all 231 of them! There were fine views back across the river, but we didn't see any pilgrims crossing this time.
We had coffee in a bar, admiring the massive fire place - it was cool today, it must be freezing in winter! We explored the old streets we didn't get to yesterday and checked out a few shop displays.
Our intention had been to lunch in a restaurant recommended to our friends, but it was closed 'for rest'. Instead, we ate in a cosy inn near the castle, trying some local specialities, including white bean soup with pig's ear and deer with port and mushrooms.
This time it was a short stroll back to our hotel to digest our meal, followed by a long siesta.
