DAY 6 - CONIL DE LA FRONTERA to SAN FERNANDO - Sunday 28 April 2024

A later start today as we walked out in bright sunshine through quiet streets.  After a little while,  we found our old friend the bikepath Eurovelo 8. This time it was a dirt track, then a paved path through a nature park.  There were lots of fellow walkers and cyclists out enjoying the sunshine.

The bikepath took us briefly past some large resorts then moved into agriculture,  with vineyards,  olives,  wheat and horses noted.  There was an abundance of wildflowers again,  and the GR 145 made a brief appearance.

We stopped in a little bar for lunch at the pretty town of Chiclana de la Frontera. We were the only tourists and it was fun trying out our Spanish again.

We enjoyed wandering the streets for a while before taking a dirt track through the marshes, finding lots of birds. The whitewashed walls of San Fernando were evident from a long way out.

Just before we crossed the bridge to enter the city,  we came across a colony of cats.  The sign explained that they weren't abandoned,  but were sterilised and left in the derelict building to control rodents and cockroaches.

In San Fernando we found the statue of Camarón de la Isla, a famous flamenco singer credited with helping to revive flamenco. We also found a statue of a fisherman selling molluscs - a kind passerby  explained that the fishermen used to come to that plaza to sell them.

The centre of San Fernando is great for walking as a tram and pedestrian zone replaces motor traffic.

Heading out of Conil de la Frontera. We saw numerous Sunday cyclists throughout the day.

  1. How warm is it there? From the photos you are covered up but that could be the sun.

A very pleasant walking temperature, the long sleeves are just for sun protection. Sometimes the wind is a bit chilly, but if you can find a spot out of it, it's wonderful. There were plenty of people on the beach yesterday working on their suntans. Didn't see any in the ocen though!

My thoughts on the Bird identifications: Black-winged Stilt, Dunlin (we expect to see lots of these in Northern Europe), Eurasian Spoonbill, Little Egret, Shelduck, Common Sandpiper (?)
