DAY 54 - MANZANAL DE LOS INFANTES to PUEBLA DE SANABRIA - Saturday 15 June 2024

We headed out on the same quiet road we'd followed in yesterday, keeping our eye out for deer. After a short while we turned onto a dirt track, which took us up into the hills. It was shady and quiet with views to the mountains.

We descended into the village of Lagarejos de la Carbadella, admiring the stone buildings and a 'lavadero', where the women of the village used to wash the clothes. A couple of old men sitting in the sun pointed out the wide dirt track to Asturianos to us.

This had oak forest both sides, as well as bright pink flowers like hollyhocks. Our friend Miles would describe it as undulating. We reached 1001 metres above sea level.

In Asturianos we had a second breakfast in the one bar that was open. The food was fine, but the bartender was barely civil, despite us following the list of rules he had pasted up. It appears that he didn't like pilgrims, only their money - this is the first time we have encountered this attitude.

After Asturianos the Camino plunged into more shady paths. At times it seemed as if we were following a river. There were muddy puddles to negotiate and photograph.

In Palacios de Sanabria we restored our faith in Spanish bars with a tapas lunch. Unlike the previous bar, this one was packed with locals, who greeted us and moved over so we could give our order. This has been more typical of our Camino experience.

Again we walked through shady forests of oak, enjoying the dappled light and mossy stones. We came to Remesal, with a statue and a drinking fountain - we have been noticing the latter over the last few days. Next we passed through Otero de Sanabria, with a pilgrim bench, some hand made Camino signs and a church with beautiful pictures above the doors. After a short hot road trudge - enlivened by spotting some more deer - we came to Triufe. We had a brief rest on the shady church steps before the final push to Puebla de Sanabria.

We have a very welcome couple of rest days here, before we continue into Galicia.

Thanks Victoria! We have been amazed at the 'garden' flowers growing wild here - lavender is one we struggle to grow because of the humidity in our area, that thrives by the side of the track here.
