DAY 63 - ALLARIZ to OURENSE - Monday 24 June 2024

We had a great breakfast at our hotel before picking up the Camino and making our way towards the river. We had a chat to a passerby who had worked in Holland for a few decades - we'd had a similar chat a few days ago with someone who'd worked in Germany. Admiring the reflections, we crossed the Roman bridge.

We headed up past allotments and horreos, refilling our bottles at the first water fountain after a helpful local pointed it out. In Galicia, we're enjoying not having to carry extra water because there are lots of fountains.

We walked along paths soft with pine needles and oak leaves, through forests and small villages. There were a lot of Camino signs and symbols and friendly locals.

At Santa Mariña de Augas Santas we detoured to taste the healing waters from the fountain of the local saint. It is said that she was beheaded in a field, and where her head landed a spring started. There were photographs from holy days as far back as 1924 posted around the village, which gave interesting background. On a path near the village, we saw the saint's seat - apparently she sat for so long she left indentations - and a basilica. A little further on we explored some Roman ruins. We had them all to ourselves, perhaps because there is no car park so you have to walk there.

After our detour, we rejoined the Camino. We stopped in a bar at Pereiras for tortilla. Pereiras is where the two variants of the Camino Sanabres reunite, and the Camino Zamorano Portugués joins too. Despite this, the path wasn't suddenly flooded with pilgrims.

The final part of today's walk was mainly along the road. There were some highlights - a nest of storks, a couple of bicycle pilgrims, a cold drink from a supermarket, some more fountains and Camino symbols.
