DAY 62 - XINZO DE LIMIA to ALLARIZ - Sunday 23 June 2024

We had a brief walk around the city centre before we donned our backpacks. We were intrigued to see the posters for the five weekend fiesta at the start of the year, where people throw flour and pots of water at each other, and masked characters roam the streets - sounds like fun!

We took the route through the restored wetlands. A local stopped to tell us the story - Franco had the lagoon drained in the 60s for agriculture, but it wasn't successful as many of the farmers emigrated to various countries in Europe and South America. The wetlands have been restored, but they still grow a lot of irrigated potatoes and wheat around here.

We saw storks nesting in trees, but not a lot of birds in the wetlands. We tried out the hide - maybe it's not so hidden from the birds.

After that we joined the road and the main Camino route through the town. We saw a lavadero and ate a handful of cherries from a tree by the side of the road. We stopped in a bar in Sandias for a café con leche before taking a minor road at the foot of a twelfth century tower. This added a little bit of distance but got us off the main road with good views up to the tower.

We walked through Piñiera de Arcos, discovering another lavadero and our first horreo, the traditional grain storage structure, raised off the ground to keep rodents and water out.

We climbed gradually via a sandy path built at the side of the road, then a shady forest path, passing through more small villages with lavaderos and horreos.

At one stage the path became overgrown and single track, then a sunken muddy road. A herd of cows watched as we negotiated the path they had churned up.

After a rest in a bus shelter, we headed downhill, at times on the road and at other times on a mossy track through the forest. Some dogs barked at us at San Salvador dos Penedos; a loose dog was quite aggressive. Past the dogs, we followed an interesting path with rocks worn smooth by many feet to the edge of Allariz.

We had a rest on a well-placed bench before descending into Allariz.

After checking in and a rest, we explored Allariz, touring the old walls, the castle and an international garden festival site down by the river.
