DAY 60 - EROSA to VERÍN - Friday 21 June 2024

It was a good day for up. Which was just as well, because the first part of the day was a lot of up!

We started out with a mix of minor road walking and dirt track. The early morning light lit up the sky and hills.

We crossed under the motorway and walked through pine forests. We crossed under again and climbed up a grassy track to the first of a series of small villages. These all had stone buildings, usually a water fountain, and often a dog, some more friendly than others. 

In O Navallo we stopped for a banana break, the outdoor exercise machine providing a convenient seat. Some sheep were in a small paddock near the path.  

At As Ferreiras the bar we'd bookmarked was closed, but a hotel provided us with a good second breakfast. There was a great selection of ride-on toys for the younger customers too. 

After this, we descended steeply into the valley before starting a steady climb again. We passed a team of three whipper-snipping the path - we've been hugely impressed with how well-maintained the paths are in Galicia. We passed some puppies who wanted to play, but we didn't want them following us, so we had to ignore them. We passed chestnut trees, some with huge circumferences. We passed a donkey sharing his field with a scarecrow. 

In Miros we came to a laundry, the traditional village washing area. We topped up our water bottles with the cool water and had a rest on the bench.

There were great views from the top before we started descending, sometimes through eucalypt trees. We came to Fumaces, where we had a delicious meal. To our surprise, another pilgrim walked in - we thought we might be the only ones on this variant of the Camino Sanabres. 

Luckily, after lunch it was all downhill, again on good tracks, well-signed. We saw our first cows of the day, and noted burnt trees as evidence of a wildfire. We saw some small vineyards - we'd had the local wine at lunch.

We eventually arrived in Verin and checked into our hotel. It was a big day, but a good one!

PREPARING FOR ANOTHER LONG WALK

We're excited to be getting ready for another adventure! This time we are heading to Spain. The plan is to walk from the southern most point to the northern most point, coast to coast.  We are utilising five pilgrim caminos, a first for us.  This is mostly because they are linking the places we want to visit,  but we are also keen to get a sense of the camino spirit we've heard so much about.   Map of our planned route across Spain We are not staying in the dormitories of the albergues - not so keen for sleepless nights - but have pre-booked a range of accommodation to ensure we get a bed at the end of every day.  Some days will have limited services so we will need to carry extra food and water.  We're very much looking forward to trying Spanish food and drink, especially the tapas and local specialities including sherry in Jerez. GIBRALTAR - THE ROCK

Today was all about the Rock of Gibraltar - it didn't disappoint!  Fortified by a good breakfast, we headed up to the Rock, starting with the Moorish Castle. There were some other tourists exploring this and the other military installations,  but most of the activity was concentrated around the cable car terminus, with its panoramic views. GIBRALTAR

After a great few days visiting family in England, we landed in Gibraltar this morning.  We now have a few rest days before starting our coast to coast walk across Spain on 25 April.  The Rock dominates the landscape here - we had amazing views from the plane window on landing.  We managed to cross the runway before a siren sounded and the runway was closed to foot traffic again to allow another plane to land.  The runway takes up the width of the peninsula.  We walked into town, surprised to see so many tourists and hearing lots of different accents. On the way we passed an enactment of soldiers participating in the Key ceremony, very colourful in their bright red jackets.  After checking into our quirky bed and breakfast, we had lunch in a British pub - fish and chips seemed appropriate.   Unfortunately the British weather followed us from England and we had to don wet weather gear for our afternoon of sightseeing.   Highlights included - fortifications in various states of repair, m
