DAY 35 - CÁCERES to CASAR DE CÁCERES - Monday 27 May 2024

We headed out of Cáceres via the Plaza Mayor and its wonderful shady arcades. The bull ring was getting a fresh coat of paint, ahead of a scheduled performance.

We left town and skirted the side of a hill, with views of the dehesa and then a great empty plain. We descended to a dirt track that ran parallel to the main road. Occasionally there were dry fords to cross, with raised stepping stones for times of flood.

The entry to Casar de Cáceres was marked by a long shady park. We bought drinks at a supermarket before checking in and then heading straight out for lunch. The servings were so big, the waiter kindly wrapped our tortilla up for us for later.

On the way back we noticed the ubiquitous bottles of water on doorsteps. Some bike-riders had told us they thought it was for pilgrims to drink. We considered this unlikely as there was too much of it and it didn't always look clean...The Camino de Santiago forum told us that it was to stop dogs peeing against the doorstep, to scare away cats, repel bugs or if you tie the bottles to your knees, they keep away blisters. Take your pick!

After a siesta we headed back to the supermarket to buy supplies. We have some long days ahead and facilities will be scarce, so it was good to have an easy day today.
