DAY 26 - ZAFRA (Rest Day) - Saturday 18 May 2024
A leisurely breakfast was followed by a stroll down to the Santa Clara museum, which displays some of the convent's treasures as well as a nun's cell. We'd read about how the nuns bake sweets for sale - originally they were made from the leftover yolks when the whites were used to clarify wine. Here we had a chance to purchase some of these specialities.
We wandered through a park then headed back to the main plaza for coffee and a bit of people-watching. There was plenty to watch:
- almond sellers touting their wares
- couples and families enjoying the sun
- children playing football in the open space
- pilgrims finishing their day's walk, usually identifiable by their backpacks, hiking sandals or big calf muscles!
We had a pre-lunch drink.
A couple of hours later we realised that lunch wasn't available at the place we were sitting at. Luckily it was available just across the plaza, so we moved a short distance and had a great lunch.
After that it was siesta time, and that was pretty much the day...a wonderful rest day!
