We had a good chat to a couple in our hotel over breakfast. They were from Cadiz but in town for the festival of San Isidro. We were hoping to join in the festivities - maybe eat a local delicacy, watch a parade - but apparently this festival takes place out in the country somewhere.
Medina de las Torres made an effort with its artworks: we discovered several large murals as well as a row of gaily painted chairs with pot plants lining the main road. There were also benches in case any weary travellers needed a sit down.
Because we had diverted from the Via de la Plata to obtain accommodation, we learnt that we were now briefly on the Camino del Sur, until it joined the Via de la Plata in Zafra - our fourth Camino so far!
We were on the road for a short while before following the signs down a dirt track. There were farms, olive trees, stone walls, lots of wildflowers and big dogs, thankfully behind fences.
When we got to Zafra, we enjoyed a huge meal in the main square of salad, bacalao dorado (a cod, potato and onion dish) and pork steak with pepper sauce.
After a rest to digest all that, we went exploring in the old town, finding the old walls and entrances, interesting crests and buildings and the local population out enjoying the evening paseo.
